This course examines the multiple factors that influenced the physical growth and rising importance of world cities in the nineteenth century.

Topics to be studied include questions of urban political organization, social class, and infrastructure in the context of international colonialism, revolution, industrialization, modernization, and war.

This course will be designed to fulfill the 4000-level requirements of the History Department meaning that it will guide students through an original research project that will utilize both primary and secondary sources and entail significant writing.
