This course examines Russian history in the 20th century and up to the present day.

Topics to be studied include the nature of the Russian empire and late Tsarist politics and society; World War I; the Russian Revolution;  the formation of the USSR,  and the momentous changes of the Soviet period, as well as the transformations that have shaped Russia since the collapse of the USSR in 1991.

This course will be designed to fulfill the 4000-level requirements of the History Department meaning that it will guide students through an original research project that will utilize both primary and secondary sources and entail significant writing.
