The Spanish Civil War was the defining event in twentieth-century Spanish history.

Though a “civil war” it was a global conflict,  serving as a proxy war for the key combatants of World War II  inspiring volunteer brigades of soldiers from abroad,  and sending out a diaspora of talented exiles who would make a huge impact on Europe during WWII and after, and in other parts of the world, especially Latin America.

This course will examine the history of the conflict in its proper global context,  beginning with its domestic origins,  and then tracing its development,  conclusion,  and long-term consequences right down to the present.

This course will be designed to fulfill the 4000-level requirements of the History Department meaning that it will guide students through an original research project that will utilize both primary and secondary sources and entail significant writing.
