This class will cover the history of American Far-Right from the origins of the nation to the present-day. We will examine organizations like the KKK and the Silver Shirts, far-right leaders ranging from Jefferson Davis to David Duke, and various movements such as pro-segregation, anti-immigration, and nativism. The primary goal of this course is to further students’ understandings of the political, social, cultural, racial, and economic forces at play that cause instances of far-right reactionary extremism throughout American history. In addition to understanding these movements, the students will garner a deeper understanding of primary and secondary sources, critical thinking and organizational skills, and analytical historical writing.
