Dr. Maura O’Connor

This course examines the history of the British Empire from the settlements of the seventeenth century to the end of the empire in the second half of the twentieth century.

It focuses on how and why the empire grew so large by the end of the nineteenth century and what effects it had on societies and peoples across the globe, as well as what effect it had on the British themselves.

All 4000-level courses must culminate in a significant historical research paper (at least 12 pages, no more than 15 pages), including primary and secondary sources. Assignments leading to the final product must include a primary source analysis and either an annotated research bibliography or a historiographical essay.

Prerequisite: To take this course, students must earn a C or higher in Hist3000.
