This course will explore the history of intoxicants in the Americas within a comparative  global perspective.

Primarily the course will explore the political, economic, and cultural forces that explain how certain substances like cocaine, opium,  and cannabis have been declared illicit while other substances like alcohol,  tobacco,  and coffee have not.

The course will begin with an examination of drugs in the pre-Hispanic era and carry through to the present day War on Drugs.

All 4000-level courses must culminate in a significant historical research paper (at least 12 pages, no more than 15 pages), including primary and secondary sources. Assignments leading to the final product must include a primary source analysis and either an annotated research bibliography or a historiographical essay.

Prerequisite: To take this course, students must earn a C or higher in Hist3000.
