Tony Russomanno

This course explores the origins of immigration to the US and the interactions of immigrants within the nation’s social, political, and economic realities since as early as the 1790s. By placing particular emphasis on topics such as nativism, assimilation, conflict, and violence, this course further examines how the evolving concept of “whiteness” have served to benefit some while excluding others. Students will explore the immigrant experience in the US through the critical analysis and use of primary evidence and academic literature within a class structure that provides both a lecture and discussion-based format.
