This class explores the emergence of modern Germany as a political,  social,  and cultural entity,  and the often troubling path this new nation would follow.

The course traces the means by which Germany was unified, and analyzes its path to industrialization.

It explores the origins of the First World War and the subsequent challenges faced by the Weimar Republic, and it grapples with the rise of National Socialism and the perpetration of the Holocaust.

Finally, it assesses the division of Germany into East and West,  and subsequent reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
