This course deals with key topics of Indian political and social history from 1885 to 1947 including Indian nationalist responses to colonialism, socio-religious reform and revival in the nineteenth century, the rise of the middle class, the emergence and evolution of communal politics, the role of Gandhi and other key nationalist figures, the granting of independence and the partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan. It will also examine the conception of India as a goddess, and the image of women in nationalist discourse.
