Anthony Russomanno

This course is an introduction to American immigration history, focusing on immigration to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Special attention will be paid to the broad historical context of mass migration in this period, including the experience of German, Irish, Polish, Italian, Slavic, Chinese, and Japanese immigrants as well as the forced migration of African slaves.

In addition to an array of secondary sources,  students will be introduced to the use of archival materials housed in the American Jewish Archives (AJA) and will conduct closely supervised research projects using a combination of secondary sources and AJA collections.

The course will culminate with each student researching and writing a long paper on an immigration history topic of his/her choice.
