This course explores the novel Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy as a guide for examining Russian history in the late imperial period, including questions related to women, children, and family life, noble society, peasant culture, government and bureaucracy, and sexuality and morality.
Students will read the novel as well as other sources from the period and the writings of historians.
