This course studies gender as a category of historical analysis in the modern Middle East and North Africa (1650-present). 

Students will read a wide range of primary and secondary sources on gender, learn different modes of analyzing gender in the history of the region, and write and speak with increasing sophistication about the topic of gender identity and praxis in this significant part of the Islamic world, with attention to non-Muslim communities in the region as well.
