Dr. Stephen Porter

This course covers the history of US foreign relations from the colonial period to the Spanish-American War in 1898.

The course emphasizes the ideological and cultural motivations behind the important foreign policy issues, conflicts, peace-making, and the continental expansion of the nation during this period.

Particular attention will be paid to the intersection of economic interests and diplomatic design as well as the impact of presidents and individual policymakers on America’s place in the world.
