A survey of American religious history from the time of the American Revolution to the present with emphasis on key figures (e.g.  William Penn, Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Mary Baker Eddy, Henry David Thoreau, Isaac Mayer Wise, Henry Ward Beecher,  etc.), the relationship between American exceptionalism and religious faith, the impact of the Bible in the public sphere, etc. Contemporary debates about religion in American life will also be considered.
