This course will examine the struggle of African-Americans to achieve equality and civil rights from the beginning of the “Jim Crow” era through to the present with emphasis on the “Classic” Civil Rights Movement from 1954-1968 and focusing on five major facets of the Civil Rights Movement:
1). “The Strange Career of Jim Crow;” The Roots of the Problem;
2). Beginnings; The Brown Decision and the Montgomery Bus Boycott
3). “I Have a Dream ” The Strategy and Tactics of the Movement
4) The Freedom Summer and Selma; The Last Great Crusades;
5). Cracks in the Coalition and the End of a Movement.
