Dr. Willard Sunderland

This course explores the history of the Russian Empire from its founding in the sixteenth century up to the period of the Russian Revolution and Civil War. We will study a wide variety of issues and themes including conquest, colonization, interethnic relations, confessional politics,  ideologies of nationalism and imperialism, and the dynamics of national rebellion and revolution both as they affected the Russians themselves as well as the many diverse cultures and peoples of the Russian state.
